The present invention is related to downhole drilling technology and, more particularly, to determining the orientation of drilling equipment within a well borehole.
In well drilling, the formation, such as hydrocarbons or water, of interest is located several thousands of feet below the earth's surface. Typically, when drilling a well, a drill bit is conveyed at the lower end of a drill string to a location adjacent the formation of interest. A drill string is typically a steel or composite pipe string which supports the drill bit and carries information and control to the surface. The drill string is filled with a drilling fluid which is circulated through the interior of the drill string by a rotating drill bit. As the drill string is rotated, the drilling fluid is pumped down the hollow central passage of the drill string and exits at the bottom of the drill string and then circulates back up the annulus formed by the wall of the drill string and the borehole wall. During drilling, the drill bit is forced downwardly against the formation of interest to create a hole in the formation and, thus, formation cuttings are dislodged and carried up the annulus. The drill string and, thus, the cutting and/or drilling equipment, is rotated in order to clean the cuttings and to then create the desired borehole.
In some instances, it is important to know or estimate the orientation of the drilling equipment (such as a drill bit or tool) with respect to the desired formation of interest. Knowledge of this orientation can be used to determine the cuttings flow direction, where the cuttings are going, and can be used to adjust drill bit and/or formation tools to optimize the cutting and drilling process.
